関川夏央の本で特に好きなのが、海外ルポルタージュ「貧民夜想會 (そう、この日記のタイトルにもなっている)」で、それこそ何度読んだか分からない (自分が持っているのは文春文庫版)

現在は「カモメホテルでまず一服」というタイトルで出版されているらしい

「汽車旅放浪記」は (旧植民地も含めた) 日本国内の旅行記だけど、「貧民夜想會」とはだいぶトーンが違う
そしてこの本の一番の読みどころは、実は旅の描写や評論ではなく、「鉄道ファン」たる関川夏央が旅の途中で遭遇した「鉄道ファン」に対するとまどいの部分なのではないかと思う
個人的におもしろかったのが、『「坊っちゃん」たちが乗った汽車』という、夏目漱石とその門下生達と鉄道の関わりを書いた章。もちろん百鬼園先生の「特別阿房列車」についても。そこが一番読みたかった部分でもある
森田草平と平塚らいてうの心中未遂事件についても記述があるのだけど、平塚らいてうは、かなり自分が大好き・自分にしか興味がない・自意識過剰な人だったらしい
嵐山光三郎も「文人暴食」の平塚らいてうの章で、そのような人物だったという書き方をしているし、それらを読んだ限りでは、確かにかなりな自分本位人間だと思うけど、これは男性から見たらそうなる、ということなのか、女性が彼女について書いても、やはり自分本位な人だった、となるのだろうか
わたしは森田草平も平塚らいてうも読んだことがないので判断できないけど、そこに少し興味がある

しかし、平塚らいてうが本当に自分本位で、自分の興味だけで他人を巻き込んで「命をかけた遊び」をする人だったとして、実はそういう自分本位さって、若い女性 (に限らないか) には (程度の差はあれ) それほど珍しいことでもない気もする
ところで「鉄道ファン」について。関川夏央は女性の鉄道ファンについて
時間旅行よりも空間旅行を愛して、ゆったりとひとり汽車の旅をしたがる (ときに車窓風景よりも車内での読書を好んだり、「旅をしながら読書する私」というイメージを好んだりする)女性の鉄道ファン「鉄子」
と書いているのだけど、鉄子はそういう人が多いのだろうか。自分の周りでは見たことがないので、ちょっと意外だった
